KATHMANDU, Nepal–Former Crown
Prince Paras Shah faces a tough legal fight in Thailand, according to Bangkok
based newspapers. Thai police nabbed Shah with methamphetamine and marijuana
there on Wednesday.
Shah was also held with narcotic
drugs in 2012 and early 2014 in the country, where former crown prince is
residing for a couple of years.
Thai police on Monday held Shah
with 5.8 gram methamphetamine and 9.7 gram marijuana. The message has been
relayed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kathmandu.
Though the Shah family has sent a
relative to Thailand to meet him and make efforts for his release.
The government of Nepal has made
no official attempts with Thai authorities on the matter, though ex-king
Gyanendra Shah has reportedly been sent as an envoy to meet Paras and make
attempts for his release.
bangkokpost.com, citing the Thai
Measure for Suppressing Narcotic Offenders Act, writes that Shah’s case falls
under Category 1 in which Thai law prescribes jail up to 10 years or
20,000-200,000 Baht in fine for anyone caught with heroin, amphetamine,
methamphetamine, MDMA (Ecstasy) and LSD.
Likewise, one faces up to 3 years
in jail or a fine ranging from 10,000 to 60,000 Baht for consuming the above
mentioned drugs.
